The French department is committed to developing global citizens by fostering language proficiency, critical thinking, and cultural awareness.

Through our comprehensive curriculum, students explore the French language and Francophone cultures, equipping them with the tools to communicate effectively and appreciate the diversity of the Francophone world.

Our programme emphasises academic excellence, personal growth, and cultural appreciation, ensuring that students gain both linguistic competence and a deeper understanding of global perspectives.

The Key Stage 3 French curriculum introduces students to the foundational elements of French language and culture, building skills and confidence in communication. Students begin by mastering core grammar and vocabulary while engaging in thematic units that provide insights into Francophone traditions and contemporary society.

In Year 7, students explore basic communication skills, including greetings, descriptions, and daily activities. Year 8 delves deeper into expressing opinions, discussing hobbies, and exploring cultural customs.

By Year 9, students progress to more complex topics such as travel, food, and environmental issues, preparing them for the transition to Key Stage 4.

Interactive lessons, multimedia resources, and regular assessments support differentiated learning. Students engage with authentic materials, participate in cultural activities, and develop analytical and creative skills essential for advanced language studies.

In Key Stage 4, students follow the Cambridge IGCSE French syllabus (0520), which builds on their foundational knowledge while refining their linguistic proficiency.

The curriculum is designed to develop communication skills, deepen cultural understanding, and foster an appreciation of the language-learning process.

The syllabus is organised into five broad thematic areas:

  • Everyday activities
  • Personal and social life
  • The world around us
  • The world of work
  • The international world

Students strengthen their ability to interpret texts, express ideas fluently, and apply grammar with accuracy. Assessments include listening, reading, speaking, and writing components, culminating in the IGCSE examination. This rigorous programme equips students with the skills needed for further language studies and global engagement.

At Key Stage 5, students undertake the International Baccalaureate (IB) Language Acquisition programme, which includes two pathways: Language ab initio for beginners and Language B for students with prior experience.

Language B and ab initio students engage with five prescribed themes:

  • Identities
  • Experiences
  • Human ingenuity
  • Social organisation
  • Sharing the planet

Higher Level students further enhance their proficiency through the study of two literary works in French. Both Higher and Standard Level students analyse diverse texts, fostering critical thinking and intercultural understanding.

The curriculum emphasises communication in various contexts, with assessments designed to evaluate receptive, productive, and interactive skills. Through written, visual, and multimedia texts, students develop the ability to consider audience, purpose, and meaning while reflecting on the cultural context of language use.

The IB programme prepares students for academic and personal success, equipping them with the skills to navigate multilingual and multicultural environments.
