Theory Of Knowledge (TOK)
Years 12-13: IB1 & IB2
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a core part of the IB Diploma Programme that encourages students to think about how we know what we claim to know. Instead of learning new facts, students explore how knowledge is developed across different subjects like history, the sciences, mathematics and the arts. They reflect on their own beliefs, consider different points of view, and learn to deal with uncertainty and complex ideas. Through activities such as an exhibition and an essay, students learn to question assumptions, make connections between different areas of learning, and develop critical thinking skills that are essential for university and beyond.
TOK has really made me question how I understand the world around me. It’s not just about facts and figures, but about exploring why we know what we know, and whether we can truly trust our own beliefs. The process of connecting ideas across different subjects has opened my mind to new perspectives and has helped me become a more critical thinker—skills that I know will be useful long after I leave school." Omar, IB2.
